America in the Nineteenth Century | HIS150-771
(HIS150-771)
This course will introduce you to the history of the United Stated form the colonial years up to 1900. We will review some of the critical figures and ideas of this period and will examine several themes including the maturation of American independence, nationhood, westward expansion, industrialization, immigration, sectional conflict, disunion and civil war. Because the scope of the course is so vast, we must skip lightly over many topics and simply ignore others. We will review competing narratives that seek to explain the American experience.
